Day 1 - Arrival in Cerdeira
Just a one hour drive from Coimbra, winding roads will take you to the highlands of Serra da Lousã. The region is known for its charming schist villages. Schist is a specific type of stone and in this region there are numerous villages built from this stone. The villages are connected by walking routes that are well sign posted and it is easy to walk between the villages.
To make this bite-sized trip more special we have arranged for you to stay overnight in your own historic (and sustainable) schist house in Cerdeira. The houses are comfortably furnished with all amenities such as a full kitchenette. Facilities include electric heating, a wood-burning stove and a basket of firewood upon arrival. You will take care of your own meals on site. So don't forget to shop in advance.
Day 2 - Walk in Talasnal
Today you will explore the magical slate villages on a guided walk. Your guide will meet you in Talasnal, which is around 30 minutes drive away. This is one of the most popular villages in the Serra da Lousã and has managed to retain its authenticity. The guide is from the region and can tell you a lot about the Aldeias do Xisto (the slate villages). Stroll through the historic streets of Talasnal, enjoying the views. Then spend a further two hours walking around the area. Depending on your experience and difficulty level, the guide can recommend different routes.
After the walk if you feel peckish we can recommend a restaurant in Talasnal. Be sure to try 'cabrito', a specialty of the region.
Day 3 - Depart from Cerdeira
Time to continue your Portuguese journey. If you haven't had the chance to explore Cerdeira, you may wish to potter around this morning. This quiet village attracts local artists and, if you're feeling creative, you can take part in a ceramics or pottery class, or recreate miniature houses.
